Delvaux, Surreal is Real
Delvaux, Secrets & Handbags RTW 19- Fall-winter 2019 collection
Saturday 2nd March 2019, 352 rue Saint-Honoré, Paris
The truth is, everything is not what it seems, and Delvaux delight in their Belgian surrealist heritage, and also delight in exploring the possibilities of the materials used within their sensational bags.
The four installation salons this season took us through a surrealist landscape, a multicoloured installation a simple wooden structure and a three construction to walk around; every one filled with amazing bags.
The Magritte folders with other folders inside them and the Magritte linings were matched by delightful, hold-all bags and wallets and all kinds of delights with cut out birds, bowler hats, clouds and umbrellas and rain.
It was a feast and many a selfie was being taken in the installation. Of course I’m there to work, so I may have smiled but no time for fun, but on to look at the rest of the collection.
The iridescent green bag like the skin of a mythological serpent was stunning and the technique and technology behind such a surface is amazing. This secret behind the scenes development supports the brilliant designs at Delvaux and one hopes the clients appreciate this.
Chocolate brown, azure blue, toffee , maroon are among this seasons classic colours each in superb pieces to covet. Hard to not describe every piece and hard to select star pieces, since every piece is a star, but just a few.
The 1829 bags with the delicate punched details recalling eighteenth century samplers were collectors bags. The teal crocodile bag with embroidery like Navajo arrows flashing across the surface, the geranium pink and black bags whose surface is like the buttoning on a Second Empire sofa, the black bag with an extraordinary surface eff et like and Elizabethan ruff was breathtaking in its craftsmanship.
A bag whose edges were twisted and secured so that the black is revealed as optical waves along each edge are fascinating, and my personal ambition part a team bag in a large scale Edwardiana style with big outside pockets, a sturdy handle and a big flap and buckle reminiscing me of the possibility of depositing a baby in a handbag as once thought of by Mr Oscar Wilde in “The Importance of Being Ernest “.
Certainly every bag at Delvaux deserves a great writer to tell it’s story; even if it’s not the truth?
