Ralph & Russo – Carreau du Temple, Paris – France Jan 21, 2019

Ralph & Russo is the brand who is known for dressing the new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle for many photo-ops including the official engagement pics with Prince Harry. How fitting then that they showed their following collection this Monday evening in the historic building of Carreau du Temple in the Marais of Paris, which foundations date from the 1300s and the Templar Knights of the Crusades.

The current building as it was for the show, is an all glass structure in the Eiffel style and built in 1863. The event, complete with large metallic lavender palm trees outlined the floor level runway that snaked its way though the large glass space, and created a perfect setting for historical elegance with modern glamour and regality.

This Spring 2019 season for the Haute Couture brand Tamara Ralph, creative director was inspired by the 40s and 50s cinema star and diva, María de los Ángeles Félix Güereña known as la La Doña.

Considered one of the most beautiful women of her time, the Mexican actress who’s work was as prolific as it was alluring included more that 47 films during her long career. She was a very perfect role model for any Couture brand hoping to span over as many years as the star.

The show started with the music of Samba à la Mexicana setting the mood as models took the runway in coordinating beaded felt gaucho hats. Embroidery and details were concentrated and rich with beaded heart cutouts, wrap-around gold-beaded serpents at waists, and Josephine Baker embroidered and beaded bananas.

The looks held an old fashioned Hollywood diva feel in colors, fabrics and silhouettes. Certain pieces were light, airy and fun with pompoms bordering the edges. At other times dresses felt a little heavy and overworked with too many swinging tassels and fringe, ruffles and flowing long trains.

There was an overall ball-gown feel to the offerings. Colors were mostly bright in fuchsia with a variety of other pinks, emerald, and mint with plenty of pastel shades of lavender, sky, aqua, and powder pink and metallic silver and gold and metal disco hues were there to assure the glitzy glamour.

Ralph & Russo’s collection this year might not have been the on the burning-hot edge of laser cutting fashion but beauty and glamour was on offer aplenty. Which really, is what their royal and movie star clients are looking for in a collection.
