Transforming the galleries of the Orbe Salon of the Palais Tokyo into the Woodstock pasture- inclusive of a natural grass runway; Junko Shimada showed this Tuesday her rebellious Spring/Summer 2019 collection.
At a time when citizens passions run high with political treason and the outcry for justice and political transparency is paramount- Junko Shimada was channeling the 1968/9 years of citizen upraise.
Show notes mentioned influences from the legends of that era: Janis Joplin; Jimmi Hendrix; and one of my personal favorites, Sly and the Family Stone. It was a pleasant and cheerful unfolding upon the reviewer’s tired eyes on the very last day of fashion weeks.
Iridescent slip dresses festooned with crochet doilies worn with daisy-decorated cowboy boots was one defiant look. Patch-worked plaids, paisleys, suede fringed dresses- AKA; Pocahontas were ramp.
There were even some of the counter black-couture dandies available, suited and afro coiffed for a stroll along Haight-Ashbury.
And yet it all seemed a bit costume ball. I do not believe anyone in the audience would be caught dead, especially gratefully in a single one of these looks.
Colors bright and festive- albeit intended in fun, clashed awkwardly, slinky transparent fabrics just looked flat and cheap. All of the playful innocents and childish freshness that was essence of the hashish-haloed era were completely remiss. I am a fan of Shimada and come to see her season-closing presentations with relish.
And it is with expectation that I wait for the next collection in hopes to swallow this season’s hiccup.
