Chanel RTW SS19, Collection – beach chic ; sensationnel!
Chanel Ready to Wear, spring-summer 19 – PFW 2018
If the invitation with its striped beach umbrella wasn’t enough of a clue, when we entered the vast space of the Grand Palais the setting of a wave lapped beach, blue skies and Chanel lifeguards confirmed that Karl Lagerfeld was in holiday mood.

Not just in holiday mood but also in splendid tip top, resort form. Opening with the easiest of pretty tweeds the models strolled along the beach carrying their Chanel slides in their hands before popping them on the wander back along the bleached wood boardwalk.
This set the uptempo mood of the collection from the very beginning. Easy shapes, neat classic jackets and a slight hint of the 50’s with bracelet length sleeves and swing backs all added to the fresh summer feeling.
Later came some beautiful multi coloured tweeds, almost rainbow but so subtle that it was only close up that the many colours worked in the pattern were revealed. Fabulous knitwear included blue white and red nautical, great twinsets and simple pieces emblazoned with the house signature.
There was also some divine lace pieces, including a tunic dress and trousers, all in classic denim blue The show closed with little black dresses in every variation from tiered baby doll flounces to nineteen thirties style tea dance looks.
The fragility of these pieces spelt summer in spite of the use of black. By taking the skills of the house at making clothes to the highest possible level for pret a porter, these pieces in the lightest of fabrics simply drifted along the shore.
The show closed as all the models reappeared in a laughing chatting avalanche running down the steps to the shore, many again shoeless, with a final twirl and a skip the show was over, save for Karl Lagerfeld appearing to receive his well deserved applause standing on a jetty attached to a shady bamboo cabana on the side of the beach.
This had been a real Paris summer 2019 collections high spot.
