Rahul Mishra- A beautiful story
Rahul Mishra Spring 2019 Ready-to-Wear Collection
There are times when the press release and the narrative behind a collection can be, well in a word, pretentious. Other times is it so obscure that it baffles rather than reveals.
by Tony Glenville
At Rahul Mishra the reverse is true, the narrative and his thoughts communicate a designer whose emotions, thoughts, memories and life are embedded in his work and it’s creation.
Drawing on memories, different regions of India, from Lucknow to Bengal, and the women of his life and their traditional dress, he creates a truly emotive yet never overpowering narrative.
However if the clothes themselves were not beautiful this would in fact be irrelevant, but they are!
This season the all white opening revealed such exquisite white on white craft and workmanship you wanted to tell the models to stop to enable one to take it all in.
The myriad techniques employed and the delicacy of the details was exquisite, in soft fluid layers of weightless fabric, simply drifting through the salons of the Mona Bismarck foundation.
The introduction of huge blue checks in very soft woven fabrics meant a slight Venice Lido, Deauville feeling entered the collection, the chic of the Art Deco period seemed to hover over the trailing pieces as they draped and wrapped around the body. The stand out for me was a white shirt embellished with lemon embroidery and a sarong wrap over trousers in the blue and white check; stunning.
So many lives to describe so much detail, yet as evidenced by the women wearing Rahul Mishra to the show, his designs are never fussy or over elaborate they are simply beautiful clothes.
Finally on a black ground appeared dress covered in what can only be described as gardens of flowers. Like the most exotic royal palace gardens the blossoms and blooms, petals, leaves, and buds were scattered with a lavish hand across the transparent black fabric.
Rahul Mishra presents couture in India, this is Pret a Porter, but the workmanship of this ready to wear is of couture standards; yet whatever else, at the heart of the collection are beautiful clothes telling a beautiful story.
